Well, I just updated to Firefox 3.5 at work - out of the 24 add-ons I use there, only two are not compatible with the new version, and I can live without them for a while. If you were wondering, they are Leetkey and Update Notifier Add-on Compatibility Center :: Add-ons for Firefox Use this link to check your add-ons for FireFox to make sure they are compatible with the new version - BEFORE you install it and find that your favorite add-on doesn't work yet... Remember a few weeks ago I had to return a blown power supply to NewEgg and buy another one locally? Well NewEgg refunded most of the money (less 'restocking fee') so I had $200+ in my paypal account. Whee. Since Amazon won't take PayPal, I went to ebay - and just bought a Asus EEE 701SD 512mb ram 8gb SSD netbook for $180! Then the rest went to Crucial for the 2gb memory upgrade chip for that unit. Wonderful! New toys! Monday, June 22, 2009

Cloudy Circumstances Surround LXLabs Suicide "LXLabs is perhaps best known for HyperVM, a popular control panel for virtual private server management. The product is used by countless VPS providers to control Xen and OpenVZ virtualization and, along with the hosting control panel Lxadmin (now known as Kloxo), to build and manage shared web hosting systems. Some twenty-four vulnerabilities in the Kloxo platform were recently discovered and patched by the company, a harbinger, perhaps of what was to come. Over the weekend, Veraserv, a hosting provider based in the United Kingdom, was the subject of a hacking attack, resulting in some 100,000 websites hosted with the company being deleted — roughly half of the company's stored user data. According to reports, many of the affected accounts had chosen the company's unmanaged hosting plans — significantly less expensive than managed plans — which did not include automatic backups, and as a result, their data may have been lost permanently." Now that is certainly a cause for concern, but suicide? One would hope that when hosting websites and data on an inexpensive plan with no backups that you would keep your own backup set, so the loss is likely nothing more than an annoyance and inconvenience to the people impacted. Certainly not worth ending your life over. Of course the story mentions that the vulnerability and hack may not be the cause. Sad, whatever the reason. Monday, June 08, 2009
Dark Shadows : The Revival (1991) We just watched the first two DVDs of the 12-episode series Dark Shadows - this is the 1990 remake - and it is quite good. IMDB has all of the epiosodes viewable online for free, I believe - but I prefer having the DVDs. :) One interesting note - the actor that played Barnabas Collins is the same fellow that plays Sarek in the new Star Trek movie.
